How Do You Measure For Blinds?

BlindsInABox is the perfect solution for renters and homeowners alike who need simple no-drill window coverings for their property. But some people may be worried about measuring their blinds correctly at the risk of having to re-purchase and try again.

Measuring your windows for blinds isn’t something you should guess-timate. It can have a serious impact on the appearance and functionality of your blinds. A less-than-perfect fit can defeat the purpose of them altogether by letting in excess heat and light.

We’ve put together this foolproof guide to measuring for blinds to ensure you get the most out of your BlindsInABox.

A guide to measuring for blinds

Let’s start with the basic equipment you’ll need. Thankfully, it’s not rocket science and it doesn’t involve any specialist tools. All you’ll need is:

    • Measuring tape or ruler: We’d always recommend using steel for accuracy’s sake.
    • Pencil: Using pen will leave permanent dots around your windows and could spoil the appearance of your windows
    • Notepad or mobile phone: To record the measurements

Recess: Inside or outside?

Before you can start measuring, you need to establish:

    1. Whether your window has a recess
    2. If it is deep enough to accommodate for your blinds
    3. Whether you want your blinds inside or outside of the recess

Your window’s recess is the frame or inset area where your window is. If your windows are flat with no recess area, skip ahead to the Outside Recess section of this guide.

It’s up to you whether you want your blinds to hang inside the recess, where they will sit right up against the window, or outside of it. If you decide to hang them inside, just check it is at least a few inches deep.

Inside recess

Measuring for blinds to be hung inside the recess area is simple: all you need to do is measure the width and height to ensure the blinds cover the whole window. Remember that your windows may not be perfectly straight or even, particularly if you live in an old property such as a cottage. To give the most accurate measurement possible, take down the width and height in three different places across the left, middle and right.

Outside recess

If you want your blinds to hang outside of the recess area, it’s important to account for additional room either side of the window to ensure it is completely covered and for any obstacles in the surrounding area, such as radiators. Recommendations vary and it depends on your exact windows, but adding 5-7cm either side (10-14cm in total) to each measurement is generally a good guideline.
